PlantVillage+
Photograph a crop to identify pests and diseases, with a free farming advice app for the field.
PlantVillage+ is a free farming advice and field record app for farmers, extension workers and researchers. It comes from PlantVillage, born at Penn State, which helps smallholder farmers adapt to climate change. On the Play Store the app keeps the identifier of Nuru, the diagnosis tool PlantVillage developed with IITA, first for cassava.
And where does AI come in?
You photograph a crop and the AI suggests what the problem may be, with advice in the supported languages. Nuru relied on object recognition trained on thousands of images annotated by experts. PlantVillage says it now evaluates several models for accuracy, relevance and cost, and replaces them when it finds better ones.
