Masakhane
Natural language processing for African languages, by Africans, for Africans.
Masakhane is an open, continent-wide research effort on natural language processing for African languages. The community builds open datasets, tools and baseline results, notably in machine translation. Linguists can contribute without technical skills, by analysing data and models.
And where does AI come in?
The project gives AI what it needs to handle African languages: open data, trained models and benchmarks. Its stated goals range from tools for government, medicine, science and education to language preservation.
