Giga
Find schools in satellite imagery, so that every one of them can be connected to the Internet.
AI inside the toolEducation and knowledgeSolidarity and inclusion
Giga is a UNICEF-ITU initiative to connect every school to the Internet by 2030. First you need to know where schools are: in many developing countries their coordinates are inaccurate, incomplete or missing altogether. The project publishes an end-to-end pipeline that finds them automatically in satellite imagery.
And where does AI come in?
Deep learning applied to high-resolution satellite imagery detects where schools are. The data helps governments and connectivity providers estimate the cost of connecting them and allocate their funding.
